Diffusion and Osmosis
Hypothesis: If i put an exposed egg in a hypo tonic solution the egg will grow then when we put an exposed egg in a hyper tonic solution the egg will shrink because of osmosis and diffusion.
Procedure:
1. We placed three eggs in vinegar three days which took the shell off the eggs leaving the cell membrane. (figure 1)
2. Then we weighed the mass of all three exposed eggs.
3. We then placed the exposed eggs in their hypo tonic and hyper tonic solutions. (figure 2)
4. We left the exposed eggs in the hypo tonic and hyper tonic solutions for about 8 hours.
5. After we took the eggs out of their solutions we weighed them.
6. The eggs grew and shrank massively.
7. Then we put the eggs back in different solutions.
8. We then waited only 3 hours to measure them again.
9. We finally did observations on how the eggs changed because of osmosis and diffusion.
Observations:
Mass 1
Mass 2
Mass 3
Egg 1
89 grams
(original weight)
39 grams
(placed in corn syrup)
86 grams
(placed in water)
Egg 2
90 grams
(original weight)
94 grams
(placed in water)
94 grams
(placed in salt water)
Egg 3
97 grams
(original weight)
98 grams
(placed in salt water)
74 grams
(placed in corn syrup)
We observed that when you put an exposed egg in a hypo tonic solution (water) the egg will increase in size and take it more water. Then when you put an exposed egg in a a hyper tonic solution ( corn syrup) the egg size will decrease massively because all the water in the egg will be sucked out resulting in diffusion.
When you put an egg in salt water very little water will be sucked up because salt can not pass through a cell membrane.
Conclusion:
In conclusion the exposed egg in water does increase in size because of osmosis. I also concluded that when you place an exposed egg in corn syrup the egg will decrease in size because of diffusion. Diffusion and Osmosis has been proven.
Relevance:
We need osmosis if we want water to travel in and out of our cells. Water needs to be able to travel in and out of our cells so therefor without osmosis we would not be alive.
